What is an Institute of Technology (IoT)

For those of you out there who are unsure or want to learn more about what Institute of Technologies are, keep reading.

Institutes of Technology (IoTs) are a government initiative, funded by a significant £290 million government investment, driving a collaboration between colleges, universities, and employers to deliver an education partnership for a much-needed skilled workforce ready for work. IoT’s are strategically positioned across England, numbering 21 hubs and they distributed across key regions in England: East Midlands, London, Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest, West Midlands, and Yorkshire and the Humber. These institutions play a crucial role in delivering innovative technical education and training, specialising in various sectors including aerospace, agriculture, automotive, business management, construction, creative industries, digital technologies, energy, engineering, food & drink, healthcare, horticulture and animal care, logistics, manufacturing, maritime, pharmaceuticals, retail & commercial enterprise, science, and transport.

Each IoTs is dedicated to addressing immediate skills gaps while fostering a sustainable talent pipeline for the future. With a focus on level 4 and 5 technical skills delivering Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs), professional training, and higher and degree apprenticeships, they strive to make higher education accessible and diverse, collaborating closely with local communities, employers, and national networks to foster collaboration, innovation, and economic growth.

The Department for Education plays a pivotal role in overseeing and supporting these IoTs, aligning with the government's commitment to delivering world-class technical education outlined in the 2020 Skills for Jobs White Paper. The IoTs, financed by a £300 million capital funding pot, are creating state-of-the-art facilities to ensure the successful realisation of their objectives and contribute significantly to a new wave of highly skilled workforce.
