Best UK universities for engineering course quality 2027: How practical teaching equipment supports hands-on learning

What makes a university stand out?

Courses where students value expert lecturers, interesting and relevant modules, and support that continues throughout their studies. Those are the factors behind Uni Compare’s 2027 course-quality table — and four UK universities lead the ranking: Nottingham Trent University, the University of Derby, the University of Sunderland and the University of Cambridge.

Derby2 Derby2

This year we found that TecQuipment has supplied engineering teaching equipment to each of the top four universities recognised for course quality, helping educators create practical, hands-on learning experiences that complement classroom teaching. We’ve also supplied equipment to most of the 100 entries but we’re focusing on the top 4 today.

From aerodynamics and fluid mechanics to structures, materials testing and thermodynamics, these ranges give lecturers practical ways to demonstrate core engineering principles and are designed to help students turn theory into measurable experience, supporting stronger understanding, confidence and preparation for engineering careers.

University Compare Reveals the UK's Best Universities for Course Quality in 2027

According to the latest University Compare Course Quality Rankings 2027, the top four UK universities for course quality are:

  1. Nottingham Trent University (NTU)
  2. University of Derby
  3. University of Sunderland
  4. University of Cambridge

These rankings are based on student feedback relating to teaching quality, lecturer expertise, module relevance, and the support students receive throughout their studies.

While excellent teaching staff and well-designed curricula are fundamental to student success, engineering education also relies heavily on access to high-quality laboratory equipment that bridges theory with real-world application.

The Role of Practical Engineering Education in Course Quality

Engineering students learn best when theoretical concepts are reinforced through experimentation. Laboratory-based learning enables students to:

  • Apply engineering theory in practice
  • Develop problem-solving skills
  • Gain experience with industry-standard equipment
  • Improve employability through hands-on learning
  • Build confidence before entering professional engineering roles

For decades, TecQuipment has partnered with universities worldwide to support experiential learning through engineering laboratory equipment. Its presence across these highly ranked universities shows how practical teaching resources can sit alongside strong teaching, relevant modules and student support as part of a wider course-quality experience.

Across the four institutions, TecQuipment records show 211 supplied-item entries, including 60 repeat purchases and 151 unique products. This indicates both breadth and continued investment, with practical teaching equipment supporting a wide range of engineering topics across these universities.

Nottingham Trent University: Comprehensive Engineering Laboratory Resources

Ranked number one for course quality by students, Nottingham Trent University has invested extensively in practical engineering teaching facilities.

Our records contain 98 supplied-item entries spanning 97 distinct product codes — the broadest range among the four institutions.

TecQuipment has supplied equipment across multiple engineering disciplines, including:

  • Aerodynamics
  • Fluid Mechanics
  • Structures
  • Strength of Materials
  • Thermodynamics
  • Engineering Science
  • Environmental Control

From NTU’s own website they state “NTU’s facilities include wind tunnel capability that can help students connect aerodynamic theory, simulation and physical testing. Using controlled airflow experiments, students can investigate drag, lift and flow behaviour, then compare measured results with predictions from coursework or computational modelling. This gives learners a practical way to validate ideas, understand the limits of idealised models and build confidence interpreting aerodynamic data”.

They also have “Mechanics teaching suites that give students dedicated space to explore solid mechanics, fluid dynamics and thermal systems through repeatable hands-on experimentation. These practical sessions can cover topics such as heat exchange, structural response and the behaviour of fluids under different conditions. By working with real equipment, students can develop the experimental judgement and analytical skills that support both their degree studies and future engineering roles”.

This broad range of equipment supports a diverse engineering curriculum, allowing students to move from theory to practical investigation across multiple subject areas.

University of Derby: Student-Recognised Excellence in Engineering Education

Second in the Course Quality Rankings and recently named University of the Year 2027 by student reviewers, the University of Derby has built a strong reputation for practical, industry-focused education.

TecQuipment records 81 supplied-item entries covering 77 distinct product codes. Equipment supplied includes:

  • Aerodynamics
  • Control Engineering
  • Fluid Mechanics
  • Engines
  • Structures
  • Thermodynamics

Derby’s strong representation across structures and fluids suggests substantial scope for varied laboratory activity across civil, mechanical and related engineering teaching. With a diverse equipment base, lecturers can align practical sessions directly with relevant modules rather than treating laboratory work as a standalone exercise, enabling students to test predictions, compare theoretical and measured results, and build confidence with the methods engineers use to investigate real systems. Investment across multiple engineering disciplines also provides students with access to a wider range of practical experiments that reinforce learning outcomes, encourage participation, and support stronger engagement with technical concepts.

University of Sunderland: Supporting Applied Engineering Learning

Ranked third nationally for course quality, the University of Sunderland continues to deliver an engineering education experience that students highly value.

Our records show 29 supplied-item, and the mix supports demonstrations and student-led experiments across several core engineering principles.

TecQuipment equipment supplied includes:

  • Aerodynamics
  • Control Engineering
  • Engineering Science
  • Fluid Mechanics
  • Structures
  • Materials Testing and Properties
  • Thermodynamics

Accessible practical equipment can encourage active participation: students move beyond reading equations to changing variables, seeing system responses and discussing why results differ from ideal models. That experience can support engaging modules and give lecturers evidence-rich activities around which to build feedback and ongoing support.

University of Cambridge: World-Class Engineering Education

The University of Cambridge completes the top four and remains one of the world's most respected institutions for engineering and scientific education.

TecQuipment has supplied equipment including:

  • Fluid Engineering
  • Electrical Power Systems

Even a focused equipment set can add value when it is embedded purposefully in a module. Practical apparatus gives students a shared system to measure, question and evaluate, helping lecturers connect rigorous theory with observable behaviour and structured analysis.

Does Engineering Laboratory Equipment Influence Course Quality?

While university rankings are shaped by numerous factors including teaching standards, student support, curriculum design, and learning environments, practical laboratory facilities remain a critical component of engineering education.

Students consistently value learning experiences that allow them to:

  • Test engineering theories through experimentation
  • Engage with real-world engineering challenges
  • Develop practical skills alongside theoretical knowledge
  • Prepare for industry careers with confidence

High-quality laboratory equipment can support these objectives by providing meaningful opportunities for experiential learning.

1. It turns theory into something students can test

Practical experiments let students see the principles behind equations. By controlling variables, collecting measurements and comparing results with predictions, learners can build a deeper understanding of engineering concepts.

2. It helps keep modules relevant

Laboratory activities can mirror the investigative workflow used in industry: define a problem, set up a test, gather data, assess uncertainty and communicate findings. That creates opportunities to connect module content with engineering practice.

3. It creates opportunities for active support

Hands-on sessions give lecturers and technicians clear moments to observe students’ understanding, diagnose misconceptions and provide timely feedback. Group experiments can also develop teamwork and technical communication.

4. Data acquisition strengthens analytical skills

With many of the purchased products compatible with our VDAS® system (designed for real-time data capture, calculation, charting and export), these capabilities can help students spend less time transcribing readings and more time interpreting evidence, evaluating results and improving experimental decisions.

5. Reliable, repeatable experiments help teaching run smoothly

When laboratory equipment is robust, repeatable and easy to integrate into teaching, practical sessions can run more consistently. This helps lecturers focus on explanation, observation and feedback, while students gain reliable opportunities to test, measure and learn from real engineering systems.

Supporting the Next Generation of Engineers

The fact that TecQuipment equipment is used by all four universities ranked highest for course quality in the University Compare 2027 rankings highlights a shared commitment to practical engineering education.

From aerodynamics and fluid mechanics to structures, control engineering and thermodynamics, these institutions are providing students with opportunities to learn through hands-on experimentation.

As universities continue to seek ways to improve student engagement, employability, and educational outcomes, investment in practical laboratory resources will remain an important element of delivering exceptional engineering education.
